Synopsis

The Earth is dying. Whole fields of crops are withering and all types of edible plant life are slowly going extinct. Not only is there a scarcity of food, but the people on Earth are also plagued by devasting dust storms. These seemingly apocalyptic events lead former pilot Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) to take to the skies and beyond. Joseph Cooper, now one of America's millons of farmers, comes across an organization, formerly known as NASA, which convinces him to use his skills as a pilot one more time in order to save civilization.

It is revealed by Dr. Brand (Michael Caine) that the Earth is in fact dying and that the only option is to find another planet capable of sustaining human life. Recently, a wormhole had appeared right next to Saturn and this wormhole was believed to be the gate to another galaxy where planets capable of sustaining life existed. Dr. Brand had already sent a small amount of honorable and intelligent astronauts through the wormhole to explore the different worlds and now needs Cooper to go and confirm and assess their findings. According to Dr. Brand, if they found a new planet for human life, there would be two plans of action. Plan A was to transport humans to this new planet using his colossal space station. Plan B was to raise a colony on the planet itself using the embryos that they were taking on the trip. Convinced that this is the only way to save his beloved daughter, Murph, Cooper left Earth and began his interstellar journey.

Review

Some may say that Interstellar is a blockbuster film that has it all. Everything from its perplexing theories, to stunning visuals, to complex characters, and not to mention its masterfully composed soundtrack have impressed millions. They say that Interstellar is one of the best science fiction films of the current century. However, I assert that Interstellar is more than a film; it is an artistic masterpiece.

For me, Interstellar easily breaks into the list of Top 20 movies of all time. Now, I could spend the hours necessary to explain every single one of the millions of reasons why Interstellar is superior to most movies on the planet; however, there is no need. It is just an amazing movie. That's all there is to it. End of story. We're done. It's over. Just a work of art. That's all I can say. This movie belongs in a museum, that's how good it is. Actually maybe not since it's not that old, but you get the point. Maybe an art gallery or an exhibition. It should be under the protection of the Pentagon. Except then nobody would be able to see it. So maybe it is good that it is not in an art gallery...but it should be. It's just that good. (Note to Mr. Sweeney (if he should happen to come across this review): You should watch this movie when you get back. It's a very solid film). :)

Quotes

Dr. Brand: Do not go gentle into that good night; Old age should burn and rave at close of day. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Cooper: Mankind was born on Earth. It was never meant to die here.

Cooper: We used to look up at the sky and wonder at our place in the stars. Now we just look down, and worry about our place in the dirt.

Cooper: We've always defined ourselves by the ability to overcome the impossible. And we count these moments. These moments when we dare to aim higher, to break barriers, to reach for the stars, to make the unknown known. We count these moments as our proudest achievements. But we lost all that. Or perhaps we've just forgotten that we are still pioneers. And we've barely begun. And that our greatest accomplishments cannot be behind us, because our destiny lies above us.

Cooper: Once you're a parent, you're the ghost of your children's future.

Cooper: We're still pioneers, we barely begun. Our greatest accomplishments cannot be behind us, cause our destiny lies above us.

Donald: Popcorn at a ball game is unnatural. I want a hot dog.

Principal: We didn't run out of planes and television sets. We ran out of food.

Dr. Mann: You're feeling it, aren't you? The survival instinct. That's what drove me. It's what drives all of us. And it's what's gonna save us. Cause I'm gonna save all of us. For you, Cooper.
